The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extends tax credits for energy efficiency upgrades to existing homes, including purchases made in 2012 and 2013. These residential tax credits cover up to 10% of the cost for energy-efficient new windows and other improvements that meet ENERGY STAR® qualifications.
Upgrades or replacement of windows, doors and skylights qualify for a tax credit of 10% of the cost, up to $500, with windows capped at $200.
Requirements:
- Must be ENERGY STAR qualified.
- Must be an existing home and your principal residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify.
- You do not have to replace all the windows, doors and skylights in your home to qualify. And it doesn’t need to be a replacement either – installing a new window where there wasn’t one previously (like in an addition) qualifies.
- Tax Credit does NOT include installation costs.
